Storm Amy threatened to dampen our spirits on Saturday afternoon, but fortune smiled on our neighbourhood once again. Just before the clock struck four, the wind dropped, the rain ceased and we were ready for our eagerly anticipated “A Little Night Music” concert.

We were delighted to welcome back The Jolly Warblers—Mark and friends—after their wonderful debut earlier this summer. This time, they treated us to an even more varied and adventurous programme that transported us through time and across continents.

The first half of the concert introduced us to Renaissance music written for the Spanish King, Charles V. Under the expert direction of conductor Kate, we were not only entertained but also educated as she shared fascinating insights into the history behind the pieces. The Warblers performed songs both sacred and secular, sung in 16th-century Spanish, Latin and—remarkably—Nahuatl, the language of the Aztecs and other Mesoamerican peoples. The combination of rich harmonies and historical storytelling made for a captivating start.

A short instrumental interlude followed, featuring enchanting recorder pieces that conjured images of minstrels performing at a medieval feast.

For the second half, the ensemble returned to home soil with a selection of English music spanning several centuries, culminating in a rousing rendition of “Goodnight Sweetheart.” Amazingly, this finale had only been assembled at the last minute, though you would never have guessed it from the gleeful performance.

Neighbours lingered to chat, clearly uplifted by the music and the sense of community it fostered. After a blustery start, the event proved that not even Storm Amy could silence A Little Night Music.
